Chapter 7

DJ was sitting on the deck in front of his hut, staring out into space when Maki arrived and sat down next to him. Maki didn't say a word as usual, but just sat with his hands on his chin. DJ looked over at him.

"Hey buddy."

Maki didn't respond.

"I hope you're not looking for another soccer game. I'm still not recovered from the first one."

Maki smiled, but didn't look up at him. DJ turned to face him.

"Look, Sarah told me about your dad. I'm sorry."

The sad look returned to Maki's face.

"You know, when I was about your age, my dad died. I didn't know what to do. I felt like I had to take care of my mom and try to do all of the things that my dad did for the family. It was a lot for a little kid." He paused and mentally threw up sandbags around his tear ducts.

"You know, a few weeks before he died, my dad was working on this little cabin that we had in the woods. Sometimes I would go down there and help him out. It was really the only time that we had to spend together. I loved it. I loved every minute of it. I remember this one day, we were working out there, and we took a little break and had some sandwiches. When we got done eating, we were about to start working again and he grabbed me by the arm. He looked right at me, reached into his pocket and pulled out this."

DJ reached into his pocket and pulled out a round hard object. "It's a macadamia nut."

He handed it over to Maki, who examined it before rolling it around in his hand.

"Dad told me that the macadamia nut is one of the hardest nuts in the world to crack."

Maki's face asked the question that his tongue could not.

"You wonder what this has to do with you, don't you. Hang on a second and hopefully you'll understand. You see, he said that I needed to be like that nut. Tough, solid, hard to crack. I had to be able to go through anything, and get through it."

Maki's confused look returned to sadness.

"I've carried that nut with me everywhere I have ever gone. It always reminds me of what he said. It always reminded me of what I needed to be."

Maki handed it back to DJ.

"You know what, I think it's time that someone else made use of it. You keep it."

Maki pulled it back and rolled it around in his hands again. He stared at it for several seconds. Then he stopped and reached into his own pocket. He pulled out a little Bible, worn and weathered. He put it in DJ's lap.

The words emerged from Maki's mouth, slowly but surely. "For you. Keep you strong."

He then ran off. DJ watched him disappear into the brush, and then picked up the Bible. He opened the first page of the Bible and read a little inscription on it.

"Maki, this will always guide your way.
